Minor Atom Wildcats Skate to Gold at Owen Sound Silver Stick
The Minor Atom A Wildcats entered the weekend of November 7-9 with great anticipation. With a strong effort in front of rock solid goaltending the team was able to win GOLD at the Silver Stick Qualifier in Owen Sound, which now qualifies them for the International Silver Stick Tournament in Newmarket Ontario January 15-17.
The team opened the round robin against the host Junior Attack and were backstopped to a 1-0 shutout win by Nathan Whittom. New Hamburg was up next and Evan Catton closed the door on the Huskies preserving a 0-0 tie. In the final game of the round robin the Wildcats battled hard and scored late in the third period to solidify a 2-2 tie against a tough East Gwillimbury Eagles team and book their spot in Sunday's Semi-Final.
With the intensity level climbing and the Wildcats facing an unfamiliar foe in the Riverside Rangers, the team played a great all around game and won 2-1 setting up a showdown with the Uxbridge Stars in the Final at the Bayshore. The game played out as expected with neither team giving an inch. Tied at 2 after regulation, the Wildcats entered the 10 minute sudden death overtime period ready to win it all. The game was decided by a Wildcat championship goal at 4:18 of the overtime frame.
Thanks go out to the management, training and coaching staff for all the hard work in making arrangements keeping the boys healthy and preparing them for the 5 hard fought games over this tournament weekend.
