FAQ (Woolwich Minor Hockey)


WMHA is following directions from Hockey Canada, the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF), the Ontario Minor Hockey League (OMHA) and Federal and Provincial and Municipal authorities


Q: Does WMHA have approval to start hockey?

A: Yes. We have submitted our Return to Play Framework for approval by the OMHA.

Q: What OHF stage are we in?

A: 3B. It can be found on the OHF website

Q: When is the registration deadline?

A: September 20th. Those that register after will be placed on a waiting list.

Q: What are the different tiers?

A: Recreational (traditionally local league/house league) and Competitive (traditionally representative)

Q: When will the season begin?

A: September 28th for Competitive and October 5th for Recreational. See the Organization Calendar for ice times.

Q: Will the registration fees be the same?

A: Yes, registration fees are the same.

Q: Are there rep fees this year?

A: For the Competitive tier, there will be a $250 fee.

Q: Are there tryouts?

A: No. Teams will be formed based on last year's placement. Coaches and WMHA Executive will make adjustments to fill player gaps (players that have not returned) as required.

Q: How many on a team?

A: Teams will consist of maximum of 9 players + 1 goalie.

Q: How will Recreational teams be formed?

A: Teams will be formed by the traditional coaches draft after an evaluation skate.

Q: How will Competitive teams be formed?

A: Competitive teams will be formed by placing the prior year’s representative players on the new competitive team (eg: 2019/20 Major Atom A becomes 2020/21 Minor Peewee A) and splitting that team into 2 rosters after any open positions have been filled (ie. Minor Peewee A White and Minor Peewee A Blue). Selected “rep” coaches will lead the teams with coaching staff split to achieve 2 rosters of less than 10 players. Players will have evaluation skates to confirm numbers and roster split only. There will be no tryouts for Competitive teams.

Q: Are there Affiliated Players (APs) this year?

A: No, players cannot cross bubbles.

Q: What does the season structure look like?

A: A minimum of 2 weeks of development, then transitioned into 4 on 4 gameplay and practices.

Q: What about the U9 and U11 Pathways?

A: Hockey Canada mandated pathways are still in effect.

Q: How many on a teams?

A: Teams will consist of maximum of 9 players + 1 goalie.

Q: How much ice time can we expect?

A: For Recreational, 2 times per week. For Competitive, 3 times per week. All local (St. Jacobs or Elmira)

Q: My child played in an older division last year, what happens to them this year?

A: Any player who played in an older age division in Woolwich for the 2019-2020 season through exceptional player movement is eligible to continue for the 2020-2021 season. No NEW exceptional player movements will be granted for the 2020-2021 season unless required to fulfill team numbers.

Q: My child can't skate on their own, can they play Initiation hockey?

A: All players signing up for Initiation hockey must be able to stand up and move on their own in order for coaches to maintain physical distancing.

Q: What can I expect when entering the facilities for hockey?

Q: Where can I find more information on Return to Hockey?

A: Please see our Return to Hockey Library for documents and links.

Q: Will a Negative Test issued by the Public Health Unit (PHU) be accepted as part of the Return to Hockey protocol?

A: Yes, a Negative Test will be accepted. A doctor's note is not required.

Q: Do I have to pay in full?

A: You can pay in full or you can pay 50% by September 25, 2020 and then other 50% on November 1, 2020.

Q: How can I pay for hockey?

A: We prefer e-transfers. They can be sent to: [email protected] . If you prefer sending a cheque, it can be sent to WMHA, 24 Snyder Ave S, Elmira, ON N3B 2Z6

Q: Is the 2019-2020 season cancelled?

A: Yes, Hockey Canada has ended the season. Details can be found here.

Q: Can I register for the 2020-2021 season?

A: Yes, registration is open for next season. At this point, we don't know what next season will look like. We wait for direction from the OMHA.

Q: What about Tryouts?

A: We cannot say when tryouts will be held. There are many rumours floating around but at this point, no Return to Hockey framework has been provided by Hockey Canada or the OMHA. The only official communication received as been the Open Letter to all Canadian from Hockey Canada which has not provided any detailed information.

Q: What happens to my registration fees if the 2020-2021 season is cancelled?

A: All fees are to be kept in trust as per direction from the OMHA. Fees will be refunded.

Q: What about payment for the 2020-2021 season?

A: Payments can be made via credit card when you register through HCR OR by sending a cheque to WMHA. We continue to receive mail.

Q: When is the early bird deadline?

A: The early bird deadline has been extended from May 31st 2020 to June 30th 2020

Q: Is there any financial assistance available?

A: Please reach out to WMHA or Friends of Hockey to discuss.

Q: When will the Annual Meeting be held?

A: August 19th, 2020 at 7pm. It will be held virtually and you must register here. More info.

Q: I was hoping to join the Executive via the Annual Meeting, what can I do now?

A: Those interested should complete this form by July 24th. The slate of nominees will be presented to the Executive on July 27th. More info.

Q: What about next years Coaches?

A: The Coach Selection Committee has named most representative coaches for the 2020/2021 season. They can be found here.

Q: Can I still request a Permission to Skate form?

A: At this point, No. Once direction has been provided by the OMHA, we will provide an update.

Q: What do we do with Jerseys and Equipment that we still have?

A: Your 2019-2020 season coach will reach out to you and outline a safe way to return the Jerseys/Equipment. This will assist in ensuring that once we do get approval to start hockey again, we can hit the ground running.

Q: What about tournaments for the 2020-2021 season?

A: The OHF and Hockey Canada have put a stop to all tournaments for next season. They are not cancelled but teams cannot register for any tournaments and any fees paid for tournaments should be refunded.

Q: Has Hockey Canada given authority to members to develop a return-to-hockey timeline as seen here?

A: Yes. We are waiting on direction from the OMHA but a Return to Hockey Framework has been issued by the OHF. Please see https://www.ohf.on.ca/risk-management/return-to-hockey-covid-19-response for more information.

Q: Is there Return to Play documentation available?

A: Yes. the OHF has released this Return to Hockey Framework. At this point, nothing has been received from the OMHA.

Q: When we know details on scheduling? Ex. Practice days, home ice days.

A: Once a Return to Play framework has been put in motion, WMHA will have to work with other associations/leagues to iron out scheduling based on the new protocol.
